Are You Codependent?

The majority of people who stay in abusive relationships suffer from Codependency. Codependency can be identified as an excessive emotional or psychological reliance on a partner. What this means put simply is that you place your partner’s needs and wants ahead of your own. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing if it’s done in moderation, but people who suffer from codependency tend to act as if their whole world revolves around their partner.  You feel as if you two broke up you couldn’t possibly go on without them. How do you know if you suffer from codependency? Some of the most common symptoms are listed below.

Low self-esteem

Feeling like you’re not good enough or comparing yourself to others.

People pleasing

You tend to try pleasing everyone and have a hard time saying no.

Poor boundaries

People with codependency tend to feel like they are responsible for other people’s feelings and problems or blame their own on someone else.

Reactivity

You react to everyone’s thoughts and feelings, either believing it or becoming defensive.

Caretaking

If someone else has a problem, you tend to want to help them completely forgetting about yourself.

Control

Codependents feel the need to control those close to them, because they need other people to behave in a certain way for them to feel ok.

Dependency

You need other people to like you to feel okay about yourself and are afraid of being abandoned or rejected.
