Introducing Your Significant Other to Your Family

A few posts ago we covered meeting your significant others family for the first time and making a good impression. This time we are going to look at it from the other point of view, getting your family ready to meet your boyfriend or girlfriend. With Thanksgiving in just a couple of days, it seems like the perfect time to start preparing your family for meeting your significant other. A little planning goes a long way, so follow the tips below and you are sure to make your experience a good one. Although this post is based around the upcoming holiday, the advice should be useful in any situation.

Prepare Your Family

An unfamiliar person in the house can change the whole atmosphere. Give your family a little bit of background information on him or her. Tell them how you met or what their job is. Let them know where you stand in the relationship to prevent any awkward situations.

Prepare Your Boyfriend or Girlfriend

This situation will be more awkward for them than your family. Think about how comfortable you would be in a room full of strangers who all know each other. Tell them about your family and some of the things they enjoy. It will be a lot easier to break the ice when he or she knows topics they are interested in to talk about.

Involve Them in the Event

Don’t just walk into the house and leave them there. Walk around and introduce him or her to everyone. Get everyone comfortable with each other. If you family isn’t against it have them help out in the kitchen, this will give everyone a chance to bond.

Have an Exit Strategy

You don’t want to just eat and leave, but it is good to always have an exit plan. If your family is the sort who every event tends to end up in a screaming match this is even more important for your situation. A simple way to do this is to prepare some kind of “look” or sign your partner can give you when they are ready to go. That’s when you will get a text message (real or fake) from a friend you two are going to meet up with giving you the excuse you need to leave.
